Books 9 Year Olds LoveBy the time your child is 9, often in fourth grade, they have typically discovered the love of reading! It is great to see kids devour books at this age. They really understand more complex concepts and series are great choices for them. I remember as a bookworm how exciting it was to discover a new author or series which would introduce me to dozens of new books!

Books 9 year olds will love might have humor, action or adventure — or all three!

Here are some of my top picks for books for 9 year olds.

[easyazon-link asin=”0060734019″ locale=”us”]Bridge to Terabithia[/easyazon-link], by Katharine Paterson: Jeff and Leslie become best buddies in the imaginary kingdom they have created in the woods. There is a tragedy (a drowning) but reading this with your child will give you the opportunity to talk it through.

[easyazon-link asin=”0061146307″ locale=”us”]A Series of Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket[/easyazon-link]: Lemony Snicket is both the author’s pen name and the character in this series that follows him through truly dastardly circumstances in dark humor that your child will love.

[easyazon-link asin=”0060581808″ locale=”us”]Little House on the Prairie Series[/easyazon-link], by Laura Ingalls Wilder: Your child is just the right age to meet Ma, Pa, Laura, Mary and Carrie. The series has lots of descriptions that can get hard to read, so reading them together allows you to can scan some parts. My favorite book in the series was On the Banks of Plum Creek!

[easyazon-link asin=”1442487984″ locale=”us”]The Spiderwick Chronicles[/easyazon-link], by Tony DiTerlizzi: Another fantasy series, this one tells the adventures of three kids in a fairy tale world. If your child is susceptible to nightmares, you might want to read this together, but the reading level is just right for kids this age.

[easyazon-link asin=”0807508551″ locale=”us”]The Boxcar Children[/easyazon-link], by Gertrude Chandler Warner : This mystery series has just the right amount of suspense to keep the pages turning but is a little “gentler” than many of the modern day choices.

[easyazon-link asin=”0451531744″ locale=”us”]Black Beauty[/easyazon-link], by Anna Sewell: This is the age when many kids fall in love with horses, and they will love this series of the beautiful black horse with the white star and his many adventures.

[easyazon-link asin=”006228360X” locale=”us”]Big Nate[/easyazon-link], by Lincoln Peirce: Nate is full of goofy school adventures that kids can totally relate to. They also really like the cartoon style drawings that accompany the tales.

[easyazon-link asin=”1494400626″ locale=”us”]The Secret Garden[/easyazon-link], by Frances Hodgson Burnett: I love this book for the calm story and also for the beautiful writing that makes you truly feel as though you are in cold, dark England..scaling the stone wall…and beholding the gorgeous garden. If you haven’t read it in  years, you will love rediscovering it!

[easyazon-link asin=”0545035171″ locale=”us”]Goosebumps[/easyazon-link], by R.L. Stine: Creepy fun, these books have just  the right amount of goosebump-inciting scare! Night of the Living Dummy is the one that started it, and you’ll cringe when the dummy starts walking around the room!

[easyazon-link asin=”0142408816″ locale=”us”]Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing[/easyazon-link], by Judy Blume: Kids will love the antics of Peter Hatcher and his crazy brother Fudge. Her refreshing style, never talking down to kids, has stood the test of time.
